building surveying university courses

Whoer's my son is hoping to do a course at uni next year and we're looking around universities soon, can anyone recommend any decent ones for this subject?

QS would be a better option IMO.

Not many Unis offer QS courses, Reading, Oxford Brookes, Herriot Watt, Salford to name a few.

Reading, College of Estate Management is the one the big surveying firms look for.

Plymouth.

Their engineering dept is incredibly well funded and equipped and there's a huge selection of courses, all fully accredited.

Don't listen to the bullshit about it being a dump either, it's a great city to be a student in.

Loughborough University has a good reputation for surveying etc.

With a bonus of great sporting facilities, if he's interested.

Have a look at Brighton, their project management courses are dual accredited by ciob and rics, I'd assume it's the same for building surveying too

Agree with what others have said about South Bank. I'd have thought the RICS would have info about courses but you can surely find listings/rankings online.

Outside of London, the big property firms certainly used to recruit a lot from Reading and Oxford Brookes. My impression (and it is only that) is that the former would be more likely to provide the type of course that others are suggesting below.

It might be worth considering doing a fairly general degree, seeing both what he enjoys and where the opportunities are, then specialising later ?

I agree with PMA and would add the real shortage within the QS role is in infrastructure - civil engineering, road and rail. That's where I am now but started in building.

Wolverhampton - great construction school, cheap as chips to live there for students and lots of links to surveying practices.

Make sure he does a placement year and also a specialism in FM or similar to keep his knowledge broad.

I am biased, by Quantity Surveying is where the money is. There is a shortage, and as a result salaries have soared since 2010.
I have been a QS for 18 years, and as jobs go, it's a pretty good one. Building Surveyor role seems to repeat, and would encourage those to just go down the Structural Engineer route, or even look at being an Architect. Much more variance.
I don't come across many Building Surveyors at all these days.

London Southbank University are pretty well geared up for this.

I had a look once.

Most people wanted to get on the quantity surveying band wagon at the time.

Mate of mine did building surveying at uni. Passed with flying colours. Got a job quickly.

Then realised hed have to spent half the rest of his waking life surveying buildings.
